America 250 in Music: The Early 1900s—Jazz, Tin Pan Alley, and a New American Sound
Presented by Hoff-Barthelson Music School in collaboration with Scarsdale Adult School, America 250 in Music is a four-part lecture series led by Dr. Derek Cooper in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. From the 18th century to today, the series traces how diverse cultures, communities, and defining events have shaped the music of the United States.
Discover the birth of the blues, the rise of jazz, the growth of recorded music, and the influential songwriters of Tin Pan Alley. This lecture will also explore new voices in American classical music, including Charles Ives and George Gershwin, as well as European composers who found refuge in the United States while fleeing Nazi Germany.
Tuition: $40 per lecture or $150 for the complete four-lecture series.
