Hoff-Barthelson Welcomes Dr. Leandro Gazineo as Director of Orchestral Programs
Hoff-Barthelson Music School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Leandro Gazineo as the new Director of Orchestral Programs. Dr. Gazineo, an accomplished conductor with a distinguished background in orchestral music, brings a wealth of experience to this pivotal role.
Dr. Gazineo’s impressive career spans a diverse array of experiences. After earning his degrees in Orchestral Conducting, he collaborated with eminent musicians and served as assistant conductor to the renowned Brazilian conductor Ligia Amadio. His work has taken him to music festivals across the USA, Brazil, and Europe, and his recent roles with youth orchestras, including the Harmony Program and Riverdale Country School, underscore his dedication to nurturing young talent.
In his new role at HBMS, Dr. Gazineo is eager to leverage his extensive experience to enhance the School’s orchestral programs. “The opportunity to become the Director of Orchestral Programs at Hoff-Barthelson Music School aligns perfectly with my ongoing reflection on developing orchestral programs with clear direction and goals,” Dr. Gazineo shared. “I am excited to bring my experience and vision to this role, fostering a vibrant and dynamic environment for our students.”
Dr. Gazineo’s journey into the world of orchestral music was deeply influenced by his early exposure to music. “Growing up in a musical family, my initial passion was sparked by the study of music theory and composition,” he shared. “The profound ability of orchestral music to connect with people on an emotional level is what continues to drive my commitment to this art form. One of the most rewarding experiences in my career has been conducting open-air concerts for audiences who are experiencing live music for the first time. Seeing the awe and wonder on their faces as they connect with the transformative power of music is profoundly moving,” he continued.
HBMS Executive Director Gabriella Sanna expressed her enthusiasm about Dr. Gazineo’s appointment, stating, “Dr. Gazineo’s deep commitment to orchestral music and his innovative vision make him a perfect fit for our School. His experience and passion will undoubtedly elevate our orchestral programs and offer exciting new opportunities for our students.”
Among Dr. Gazineo’s plans for the orchestral program are several initiatives aimed at expanding its impact. He envisions hosting conducting and soloist workshops, exploring collaborations with other ensembles, and organizing tours. Additionally, he aims to introduce Latin American compositions and contemporary works by living composers to the Festival Orchestra, enriching the program’s repertoire.
“My conducting style has evolved to embrace a more emotive and flexible approach,” Dr. Gazineo noted. “I believe that a successful orchestral performance requires a balance between discipline and creativity. This philosophy will guide my work with the students and help create a rich, engaging experience.”
Dr. Gazineo’s dedication to working with young musicians is evident. “What I find most fulfilling is guiding their growth and witnessing their boundless enthusiasm for music,” he shared. “Their eagerness to learn and strive for excellence brings fresh energy to every rehearsal and performance.”
As Dr. Gazineo steps into his new role, he is excited about the opportunity to connect the School’s orchestras with the broader Scarsdale community. “I encourage everyone to get involved, whether by joining our ensembles or attending our performances,” he said. “Orchestra is such a powerful and enriching experience, and I believe it can bring our community together in wonderful ways.”
The Hoff-Barthelson Music School community looks forward to an exciting new chapter under Dr. Gazineo’s leadership, filled with musical growth, innovation, and vibrant community engagement.

Hoff-Barthelson Flute Ensemble Shines at the United Nations
In a historic achievement for Hoff-Barthelson Music School, the Flute Ensemble recently took the stage at the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. This special event, centered on themes of global peace, hope, and unity, offered a unique platform for the ensemble to contribute to an important international dialogue through the universal language of music.
This prestigious opportunity arose through Ling Wang, an HBMS parent and Senior Sustainable Development Officer at the UN. She informed the School about a highly competitive opportunity to present a 4–5-minute musical piece embodying the themes of peace, hope, and unity, requiring a multi-generational ensemble of at least 20 members. A flute ensemble which included members from the Junior Flutes, Flute Club, and Adult Flute Choir was selected to compete on behalf of the School.
The selection process was rigorous, with numerous ensembles vying for this rare opportunity. Selecting a piece that effectively conveyed the themes of peace, hope, and unity without lyrics was a creative challenge for the ensemble. Several options were considered including arrangements of Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” and “Umoja” by Valerie Coleman, a piece that means “unity” in Swahili. Ultimately, UN officials selected the ensemble to perform “Umoja” as it resonated with the Economic and Social Council’s theme of “Unity,” perfectly aligning with the event’s goals and showcasing our ensemble’s ability to deliver powerful messages through instrumental music. This recognition is a testament to the exceptional skill and spirit of our musicians.
Performing at such a notable event was not only a meaningful experience for the musicians but also a testament to the power of music in bridging generational and cultural divides. The event fostered a deeper connection among the Junior Flutes, Flute Club, and Adult Flute Choir, enhancing their collective performance and shared experience.
Donna Elaine, the director of the ensemble, reflected on the experience, saying, “It was incredibly rewarding to see our ensemble come together to share such an important message on a global stage. The performance was more than just a musical presentation; it was a demonstration of our shared values and commitment to unity.”
A member of the Adult Flute Choir added, “Participating in this event was both inspiring and fulfilling. It was a privilege to contribute to a message of unity and hope at the UN.”
Ling Wang praised the ensemble’s contribution to the event: “It was a great pleasure to see that Hoff-Barthelson’s flute ensemble brought the cross-generation spirit of unity, solidarity, and diversity to the UN High-level Political Forum. Music education plays an important role in promoting decent life for all and supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.”
The performance left a lasting impression on both participants and audience members. One parent noted that their child would cherish the experience for years, underscoring the profound impact of such opportunities.
The event also underscored Hoff-Barthelson’s commitment to using music as a means to enrich lives and foster community connections. Gabriella Sanna, Executive Director of HBMS, noted, “This performance was a testament to the power of music education in bridging generational and cultural gaps. It was an honor to see our ensemble represent these values on such a significant stage.”
Hoff-Barthelson Flute Ensemble’s performance at the United Nations was a memorable and impactful experience that exemplified the role of music in advocating for global harmony and unity. The event not only celebrated the talents of the ensemble but also reinforced the enduring power of music to inspire and unite people across the world.
Congratulations to the performers and ensemble directors Donna Elaine and Joesph Piscitelli!

Explore the Rhythms of the Hoff-Barthelson Adult Jazz Ensemble
At Hoff-Barthelson Music School, there’s a rhythm to suit every taste, and one of the standout offerings is our Adult Jazz Ensemble! Every Wednesday evening the building is rockin’ with the sounds of this dedicated group of musicians, jamming under the watchful ear and expert guidance of Ed Palermo, Hoff-Barthelson’s Coordinator of Jazz Studies.
The Adult Jazz Ensemble, a treasured part of the Hoff-Barthelson community for fifteen years, offers a unique blend of musical passion and personal fulfillment. This ensemble is composed of adults who, having studied music in their youth, are returning to their craft for the sheer joy of it. Ed, who expertly arranges music and customizes parts to suit each player’s skill level, leads the group with his infectious enthusiasm and exceptional talent. “It’s incredible to see how the group evolves each week,” says Ed. “The joy and creativity these musicians bring to the table is truly inspiring.”
The Ensemble’s repertoire is a celebration of jazz history and standards, with a special emphasis on the works of Gershwin and classics from the Great American Songbook. Featuring a diverse mix of instruments— including a vocalist, several reed players, and a rhythm section—the group delivers performances that captivate audiences. Over the years, they’ve brought their music to various venues, from Hoff-Barthelson Festivals and local events to assisted living facilities, and even performed at Jazz Under the Tent in Scarsdale during the pandemic.
With members hailing from varied professional backgrounds—educators, scientists, lawyers, a tax assessor, and even the Mayor of Irvington, who is the ensemble’s resident drummer—there is no shortage of talent and dedication. One member reflects, “Being part of this ensemble has been incredibly fulfilling. Ed’s expertise and the camaraderie within the group make every rehearsal a highlight of my week.”
