America 250 in Music: The 1800s—Spirituals, Marches, and Ragtime
Presented by Hoff-Barthelson Music School in collaboration with Scarsdale Adult School, America 250 in Music is a four-part lecture series led by Dr. Derek Cooper in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. From the 18th century to today, the series traces how diverse cultures, communities, and defining events have shaped the music of the United States.
Discover the profound influence of spirituals and the music of enslaved Americans, the popular songs of Stephen Foster, and the stirring marches of John Philip Sousa. The lecture will also explore the emergence of ragtime after the Civil War and its important place in the development of American music.
Tuition: $40 per lecture or $150 for the complete four-lecture series.
