Accompanist (Part-Time)

Position Description

The accompanist works with students of all ages and ability levels during private lessons, workshops, rehearsals, and performances. Repertoire ranges from Suzuki Strings Book 1 – primarily violin and cello – to concert-level works performed by advanced students.

The accompanist must be comfortable performing classical music, musical theater, and fully composed jazz repertoire. Jazz improvisation and realizing charts are not required. This position reports to the Dean.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany instrumentalists, vocalists, choirs, and ensembles as assigned.
  • Collaborate with faculty during lessons, rehearsals, workshops, and performances.
  • Learn and perform repertoire accurately, confidently, and professionally.
  • Maintain records required to administer the accompaniment program.
  • Communicate clearly and promptly with faculty and administrators.
  • Support HBMS’s mission and commitment to excellent, inspiring music education.
  • Follow the School’s Code of Conduct and complete required workplace training.

Qualifications

  • Master of Music, Master of Music Education, or equivalent experience; candidates with a Bachelor of Music and substantial professional experience will also be considered.
  • At least five years of professional accompanying experience.
  • Experience in community arts education preferred.
  • Excellent accompanying, collaborative, and sight-reading skills.
  • Ability to learn new repertoire quickly and accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable using email and basic Microsoft Word and Excel; willing to learn other technologies used by the School.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $40+ per hour.

Location and Hours

Work takes place at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale, New York, or at off-site locations arranged by the School.

HBMS offers instruction Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Assignments are scheduled within these hours.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required pre-employment screenings, including a background check, and timely completion of New York State-mandated discrimination and harassment prevention training.
