Rick Ostrovsky is an active freelance musician who performs regularly with some of the most respected ensembles in New York City. He is a member of the American Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Lumos, formerly the Stamford Symphony, and has also performed with the American Composers Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York City Ballet. He has toured extensively with a variety of ensembles, appearing in major concert halls throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia.
Mr. Ostrovsky performs and teaches on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival and also performs with the American Symphony Orchestra at the Bard Music Festival. He can be heard on orchestral recordings with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and is the solo bassist on recordings by the Gowanus Arts Ensemble.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Ostrovsky was a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and served as solo bassist with the Soviet Emigre Orchestra, an ensemble of thirteen string players that performed without a conductor.
Mr. Ostrovsky has also performed on Broadway, playing regularly as bassist for productions including The Secret Garden, Beauty and the Beast, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. In addition to his orchestral and theater work, he has appeared in a variety of chamber and solo settings, including a performance of Bottesini’s Gran Duo with violinist Erick Friedman, and has shared the recital stage with his wife, soprano Kaori Sato.
Mr. Ostrovsky received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Homer Mensch.
