Cellist Hyun-Ji Kwon is an accomplished performer and educator whose career spans classical and chamber music, orchestral performance, Broadway musical theater, contemporary music, and recording.
A native of Seoul, Korea, Kwon earned her Bachelor of Music from Ewha Womans University, where she served as principal cellist of the university orchestra and appeared as a soloist in two consecutive seasons. She received top prize in the Seoul Symphony Orchestra Competition and third prize in the Seoul Youth Chamber Music Competition. She continued her studies at New England Conservatory, earning a Master of Music and Graduate Diploma, and later completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in Cello Performance at Boston University.
Kwon is a member of the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra and has performed with the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Her chamber music activities include the Meadowlark Trio, Echo Bridge Cellos, and Convergence Ensemble. She has appeared as a soloist with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme and has served as principal cellist for Andrea Bocelli’s Boston concerts.
Equally at home in the theater, Kwon’s Broadway credits include Cello Chair for The Queen of Versailles and the Broadway National Tour of 1776, along with performances in numerous Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional productions. She began her musical theater career in Seoul with productions including The Phantom of the Opera and Jack the Ripper. Her recording work includes original motion picture soundtracks for several Korean films, including Oldboy and Lady Vengeance.
A dedicated educator, Kwon has taught at Phillips Exeter Academy, Project STEP, Boston University, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Colby College.
