SUMMARY:World Premiere: We long to wait
DESCRIPTION:The Music of Our Time Festival concludes with the premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer Flannery Cunningham\, recipient of support through the Wilma Machover Fund. Her piece\, We long to wake\, for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble\, draws on poetry by Carl Sandburg and the traditions of Sacred Harp singing to explore themes of mortality\, human experience\, and the urgency of living with awareness and intention. \n“In We long to wake\, I was drawn to the idea of contrasting human worlds and the ways music can bring them into conversation\,” said Flannery Cunningham. “The piece ultimately asks us to reflect on how we live—to remain awake to what matters most and to the shared human experiences that connect us.” \nIn addition to the commissioned work\,  the concert will include contemporary works performed by HBMS faculty and students. The winner of the 2026 Wilma Machover Prize will also be announced. \nThe concert is free of charge and open to the public. \nView Festival flyer here.

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Frautschi\, violin\nTwo-time Grammy nominee and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Jennifer Frautschi has appeared as soloist with many of the nation’s leading orchestras\, including the Chicago Symphony\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Minnesota Orchestra\, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. A passionate chamber musician\, she is an artist-member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and has performed at Chamber Music Northwest\, Music@Menlo\, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, and numerous festivals including Ojai\, Santa Fe\, Seattle\, Spoleto\, and La Jolla SummerFest. \nHer wide-ranging discography includes Grammy-nominated recordings of Schoenberg’s Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra and String Quartet No. 3 with the Fred Sherry Quartet\, Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with Robert Craft and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London\, and\, with pianist John Blacklow\, Schumann’s three violin sonatas and American Duos\, featuring works by contemporary American composers. \nA Pasadena native\, Frautschi studied at the Colburn School\, Harvard\, the New England Conservatory\, and the Juilliard School. She performs on the 1722 “ex-Cádiz” Antonio Stradivarius and teaches in the graduate program at Stony Brook University. \nMaster Classes at Hoff-Barthelson are open to the public to observe free of charge.
