SUMMARY:Flute Master Class with Mindy Kaufman
DESCRIPTION:Mindy Kaufman served as a member of the New York Philharmonic for 47 years\, from 1979 to 2026. A highly versatile musician\, she performed not only as the orchestra’s piccolo player but also in every chair of the flute section\, including principal flute on Live from Lincoln Center\, alto flute in Daphnis et Chloé and The Rite of Spring\, second flute\, and bass flute. During her distinguished tenure with the Philharmonic\, Ms. Kaufman appeared as both piccolo and flute soloist under former Music Directors Zubin Mehta\, Kurt Masur\, and Lorin Maazel. Prior to joining the New York\nPhilharmonic\, she joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra while still a student. She served for one season as substitute principal flute with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra\, during which time she recorded works by Dvořák and Kodály with music director Zdenek Macal. \nMs. Kaufman has performed at numerous music festivals and chamber music series\, including the Telluride Chamber Music Festival\, Moab Music Festival\, Grand Teton Music Festival\, Mt. Kisco Concert Association\, Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music\, and New York Philharmonic Ensembles. \nHer solo recordings include Avner Dorman’s Piccolo Concerto with the Metropolis Ensemble\, Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto with the New York Philharmonic\, and David Fulmer’s Sky’s Acetylene on which she performs piccolo\, flute\, and bass flute. She also released a solo recording\, French Flute Music. \nA graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree\, Ms. Kaufman studied with Walfrid Kujala\, Sir James Galway\, and Bonita Boyd. She is an auxiliary instrument instructor at Juilliard\, where she teaches piccolo. She previously taught flute and chamber music at Columbia University\, and continues to give master classes all over the USA. \nIn addition to her orchestral and teaching careers\, Ms. Kaufman has performed on more than 50 film and television soundtracks\, including The Devil Wears Prada 2\, Barbie\, Julie & Julia\, and The Gilded Age. \nA performer of remarkable artistry\, versatility\, and dedication\, Mindy Kaufman leaves an enduring legacy through her 47 years with the New York Philharmonic\, her recordings\, her teaching\, and the generations of musicians and audiences she has inspired. \nMaster Classes are open to the public to observe free of charge.
